Clostridium perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis and related subclinical diseases have become economically significant problems for the poultry industry.
Necrotic enteritis, an enterotoxemic disease caused by Clostridium perfringens, leads to the development of necrotic lesions in the gut wall, resulting in mortality of poultry. This disease is also multifactorial with complex and partially unknown epidemiology and pathogenesis. Studies have also shown that a healthy chicken has a relatively low number of C. perfringens cells in its gastrointestinal tract, while an increase in the concentration of the bacterium has been correlated with necrotic enteritis. Bacitracin, lincomycin, and other growth-promoting antibiotics are commonly used to treat poultry suffering from necrotic enteritis. However, due to the isolation of antibiotic-resistant strains of C. perfringens from chickens and turkeys, other non-antibiotic alternatives are being sought.
Role of Bacillus subtilis in NE-Guard
Bacillus subtilis is a spore forming bacteria, which can grow under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Bacillus subtilis secretes a group of peptides, which are inhibitory towards common enteric pathogens such as Clostridium perfringens, implicated in outbreaks of NE in chickens and Campylobacter spp.
Role of Saccharomyces boulardii in NE-Guard
S. boulardii is very effective against common opportunistic intestinal pathogens like clostridium difficile, a causative organism in antibiotic associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis, enterotoxigenic and haemorrhagic E.Coli. Its mode of action corresponds to a real “shield effect” reinforcing the microbial ecosystem and thereby it helps to prevent the predisposing factors of Clostridial infections.
S. boulardii helps in neutralization of certain bacterial toxins (Clostridia difficile, E.coli,).
